| Downtown Long Beach Redevelopment Plan |

 |
| This project is an architectural approach to an urban design problem. The city of Long Beach has suffered from the “flight to the suburbs.” In addition, with the departure of the Navy and downsizing of the Aerospace industry, the city has undergone a decline in vitality. In an effort to bring back vibrant life into this four city block area that is nestled between the fine-grained neighborhoods to the north and large footprint civic highrises to the south, a design solution has been proposed. The program consists of about 1000 housing units (some of which are live/work spaces), retail and office spaces, a market hall, and an underground desalination plant that could provide fresh water to the entire development. It is an urban edge that will act as a transition between existing residential neighborhoods and new commercial development. |
