The new buildings are an educational adaptation of the concept of mixed-use, incorporating science labs and general classrooms within the same building. Decentralizing the science and connecting the program directly with each SLC is an important aspect in the SLC development. The concept for the arrangement of the science labs and general classrooms is connection. In contrast to the long ‘finger’ arrangement of the existing buildings, the new buildings turn back towards the campus, making an ‘L’ and framing an outdoor court for each SLC. All of the new classrooms and labs have a direct connection to the court. The court also provides a connection with the existing classrooms. The connections continue within the new buildings as each classroom is connected to the adjacent classroom both visually and physically through the use of doorways and windows.

To begin the transformation of the campuses, the concept is to take the introverted double loaded corridor configuration of the existing buildings and turn the orientation to the exterior. The re-orientation provides a much stronger physical connection within each SLC. The design accomplishes this by the development of stronger exterior circulation paths incorporating covered walkways and exterior doors to the classrooms.
