| The Harbor Replacement Station project rests on a narrow finger of land abutting the Harbor Freeway, directly across from the shipping container off-loading yards of the LA Harbor. The program includes a state-of-the-art police station with 60-bed jail, 283-vehicle parking structure with helistop, vehicle maintenance/fueling/washing facility, visitor parking, and outdoor garden plazas. The site’s linear nature led to 3 bar-shaped buildings paralleling the freeway. Of paramount concern was balancing a community-friendly image unique to the harbor locale with critical, invisible security concerns. The plan embraces an existing grove of eucalyptus trees retained as a public garden and separate, secure staff gardens. The material and color palette is chosen for durability, security, and as a contextual response to the surrounding harbor environment. This facility is registered for LEED® certification. |
