| LAUSD Central Region High School #13 serves a community, which developed around the historic Pacific Electric Railway and an environmentally protected area of the Los Angeles Riverbed.
The site presents environmental restrictions from the nearby railway switching station’s particulate emissions. These existing conditions strongly influenced the organization of the campus into four distinct zones: ranging from the parking/service area bordering the railway to active outdoor recreation, easily accessible to the community. The shared campus community buildings, with broad canopies, are grouped together to form a protective barrier against the particulate emissions. The classroom buildings fan out and open up as air quality improves, culminating in the play fields, the only location on the site where active outdoor recreation can occur. The resultant campus is comprised of nearly 214,000 square feet, serving a student population of 2,295 in 85 classrooms, and a construction budget of $76.5M.
